Shoulder pain can considerably restrict quality of life. If you live in Munich and suffer from complaints in the shoulder area, you have come to exactly the right place with an experienced shoulder specialist in Munich. Whether caused by sports injuries, overuse or age-related wear – the causes of shoulder pain are many and varied. Our specialised consultants in Munich offer you precise diagnostics and individual therapy for your shoulder complaints – so that you can soon get going again free of pain.
Shoulder instability and shoulder dislocation – recognising and treating them early
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in our body – and that is precisely what makes it particularly susceptible to instability and dislocation. A shoulder dislocation, that is the humeral head slipping out of the joint, is not only painful but can also cause long-term problems if it remains untreated.
Typical symptoms are sudden pain, a cracking sensation on movement and a feeling of insecurity in the shoulder joint. Our shoulder specialists in Munich use modern imaging procedures such as MRI and ultrasound in order to find the exact cause. Depending on the severity, conservative treatments such as physiotherapy are used or – in the case of repeated dislocations – arthroscopic surgery. Our aim is to make your shoulder stable and resilient – in the long term and sustainably.
Calcific tendinitis – when deposits cause pain
So-called calcific tendinitis (tendinosis calcarea) is a common cause of severe shoulder pain. Calcium is deposited in the tendons of the rotator cuff, which can lead to inflammation and restricted movement. In Munich we treat this condition with a great deal of experience and sensitivity.
Following precise diagnostics by our shoulder specialists in Munich we offer various therapeutic approaches – from targeted physiotherapy through to shockwave therapy. If these measures are not sufficient, the calcium deposit can be removed minimally invasively as part of an arthroscopy. The aim is always to restore your full mobility – if possible without surgery.
Damage to the rotator cuff – precise diagnosis, effective therapy
Rotator cuff injuries are among the most common causes of chronic shoulder pain. They arise from wear, overuse or accidents – and considerably impair the mobility and stability of the shoulder.
Our shoulder specialists in Munich carry out detailed diagnostics in order to determine the extent and type of the damage. With the help of MRI and ultrasound, even smaller tears can be reliably detected. The treatment depends on the severity of the injury: from conservative measures such as physiotherapy through to arthroscopic suturing of the torn tendon. In every case you receive a treatment tailored individually to you.
Shoulder osteoarthritis – when wear causes pain
With increasing age or after earlier injuries, osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint (omarthrosis) can develop. This chronic joint disease causes increasing pain, restricted movement and a markedly reduced quality of life.
Our experienced shoulder specialists in Munich recognise the signs of shoulder osteoarthritis at an early stage and advise you in detail on conservative and surgical treatment options. Physiotherapy, targeted injections or hyaluronic acid treatments can help to relieve pain and preserve mobility. If the cartilage damage is too far advanced, joint replacement – for example a reverse shoulder replacement – may become necessary. Together we will find the therapy that suits you.
Injuries to the acromioclavicular joint (AC joint)
Injuries to the acromioclavicular joint, also known as AC joint dislocations, frequently occur as a result of falls or sports injuries. Typical symptoms are pain over the collarbone, swelling and visible deformity.
Our Munich specialists assess the stability of the joint precisely – often conservative treatment with immobilisation and physiotherapy is sufficient. In more severe injuries, arthroscopic surgery with a pulley system may be necessary in order to restore the anatomical position of the collarbone. Thanks to our experience in shoulder surgery we achieve rapid rehabilitation and high success rates.
Further shoulder conditions: bursitis, tendon inflammation and fractures
In addition to the classic conditions, our shoulder specialists in Munich also treat further shoulder problems – for instance inflammation of the bursa (bursitis), tendon inflammation caused by overuse or shoulder fractures following accidents.
Bursitis and tendinitis frequently cause stabbing pain and restricted movement when lifting the arm. Early therapies such as anti-inflammatory medication, injections or targeted exercises can prevent the condition from becoming chronic. In the case of fractures and dislocations, surgical stabilisation is often required. Our experts accompany you competently throughout the entire treatment – from the first diagnosis to follow-up care.
Your shoulder specialist in Munich – individual, experienced, reliable
You should not take shoulder complaints lightly. A timely diagnosis and a therapy geared to you are decisive in avoiding long-term damage. Our shoulder specialists in Munich have many years of experience, the most modern diagnostic techniques and comprehensive therapeutic competence.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions for your shoulder specialist in Munich
Shoulder orthopaedist Munich: which doctor is the right one for shoulder pain?
The best person to consult about shoulder pain is an experienced shoulder specialist, ideally a consultant in orthopaedics and trauma surgery specialising in shoulder surgery. In Munich you will find highly qualified specialists who master both conservative and surgical procedures and who respond individually to your complaints.
Shoulder orthopaedist Munich: who operates on the shoulder?
Shoulder operations are performed by specialised orthopaedic or trauma surgeons who have specialised in arthroscopic and open procedures in the shoulder area. These consultants have extensive experience in the surgical management of tendon tears, instability or osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint.
When should the shoulder be operated on?
A shoulder operation is appropriate when conservative measures such as physiotherapy, injections or pain therapy are no longer sufficient to relieve the complaints. Surgery is also recommended in the case of structural damage such as a tendon tear or chronic instability.
Which shoulder operation is performed most frequently?
The most common shoulder operations include arthroscopic procedures on the rotator cuff, the removal of calcium deposits in calcific tendinitis, and stabilisation after shoulder dislocations. The use of a shoulder replacement in osteoarthritis is also a common measure.
How risky is shoulder surgery?
Modern shoulder operations are considered very safe, particularly when they are carried out by experienced shoulder specialists in Munich. As with every procedure there are risks such as infection, bruising or restricted movement, but thanks to minimally invasive techniques these occur only rarely.
Which shoulder operation is the most painful?
Many patients find the reconstruction of the rotator cuff the most painful, particularly in the first few days after the operation. Thanks to modern anaesthesia and closely monitored pain therapy, however, the postoperative phase is easily manageable.
How long do you have to stay in hospital after shoulder surgery?
The length of the hospital stay depends on the type of procedure. For arthroscopic operations a stay of 1 to 3 days is often sufficient, whereas for more extensive procedures such as the implantation of a replacement, 4 to 7 days are usual.
Is rehabilitation after shoulder surgery advisable?
Yes, a subsequent course of rehabilitation is highly recommended. It supports healing, improves mobility and helps to restore shoulder function in the long term. Shoulder specialists in Munich often work closely with specialised rehabilitation centres.
How long do you have to wear a brace after shoulder surgery?
The length of time a brace has to be worn varies according to the procedure. After a tendon reconstruction, 4 to 6 weeks of immobilisation are usually necessary in order to allow optimal healing. Your shoulder specialist will adapt the duration individually to the course of your recovery.
How can you tell whether a tendon in the shoulder has torn?
A tendon tear often manifests itself through sudden pain, loss of strength and restricted movement, particularly when lifting the arm. An audible „crack“ or a sensation of „slipping“ can be an indication of an acute tear. An ultrasound or MRI examination is carried out to confirm this.
Shoulder orthopaedics Munich: how does the diagnosis of shoulder pain proceed?
The best diagnostic approach for shoulder pain is a combination of history taking, clinical examination and imaging procedures such as ultrasound, X-ray or MRI. Shoulder specialists in Munich use these methods in a targeted way in order to determine the cause of your complaints precisely and to develop a tailor-made therapy.
What is the best pain-relief gel for shoulder pain?
There are various over-the-counter pain gels with anti-inflammatory active ingredients such as diclofenac or ibuprofen which can help with acute complaints. Examples are Voltaren Schmerzgel or Mobilat Duoaktiv Gel. Nevertheless, targeted treatment by a consultant is advisable in order to treat the cause of the pain and not just the symptoms.
Shoulder orthopaedics Munich: when does conservative therapy help, when is surgery needed?
Most shoulder conditions can initially be treated conservatively – with physiotherapy, targeted muscle building, anti-inflammatory medication or injections. Surgery comes into consideration if the complaints persist despite consistent conservative therapy, if the function of the shoulder is permanently restricted, or if there is a structural injury that will not heal on its own – for instance a larger tear of the rotator cuff or recurrent instability. The decisive factors are the findings, age, the demands placed on the shoulder and the course to date.
Shoulder specialists Munich: how do I recognise a good doctor?
Look for the consultant qualification in orthopaedics and trauma surgery with a recognisable focus on the shoulder, for experience with precisely the procedure that is under consideration in your case, and for the fact that conservative and surgical procedures are offered in equal measure. It is also a good sign if the findings are explained to you in an understandable way, if alternatives to surgery are openly discussed and if you are not put under pressure about obtaining a second opinion.
Shoulder specialist Munich: for which complaints should I make an appointment?
An appointment is advisable if shoulder pain persists for longer than two to three weeks, occurs at night or disturbs your sleep, if the arm can no longer be lifted above the head, if the shoulder hurts after a fall or an accident or feels unstable, or if loss of strength and restricted movement are increasing. After a dislocated shoulder or a sudden loss of strength, assessment should take place promptly.
